Quadruped robot kits you can build
For a first robot dog, Petoi Bittle X is the easiest: a $319 construction kit that needs no printer and walks out of the box. Mini Pupper 2 ($604 to $649) is the pick if you want ROS 2, a Raspberry Pi CM4 and room for lidar. If you would rather source and print parts yourself, SpotMicro is the cheapest open build and Stanford Pupper is the better engineered one.
What matters
- Kit or scratch build: Bittle X and Mini Pupper 2 ship as kits; SpotMicro and Stanford Pupper are parts lists you buy and print yourself.
- Size: Bittle X and Mini Pupper fit on a desk; SpotMicro and Pupper are closer to a small dog and need a real battery.
- Software: Mini Pupper runs ROS 2 on a CM4; Bittle X runs on an ESP32 with block, C++ and Python coding; Pupper and SpotMicro run Python on a Raspberry Pi.
- Servo quality sets how well it walks: cheap MG996R servos limit SpotMicro, while Pupper's coreless JX servos cost more but carry the robot.
- 3D printing: SpotMicro is almost fully printed; Pupper mixes printed hips with carbon fiber plates; the two kits need no printer.
Our picks
| Pick | Why | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Petoi Bittle X Beginners, classrooms, no printer | Builds in under an hour, takes voice commands, and has spare parts sold separately. The alloy-servo kit is worth it if you plan to add the arm. | Petoi: $319.00 Bittle X V2, construction kit, lite servos RobotShop: $319.00 Petoi Bittle X V2 - Lite Servo - Construction |
| Mini Pupper 2 Learning ROS 2, SLAM and vision on a small dog | A shrunken Stanford Pupper design on a Raspberry Pi CM4 with ROS 2 support. Pricier, but the most complete software stack in this list. | MangDang: $649.00 Mini Pupper 2 Pre-assembled Kit RobotShop: $649.00 Mini Pupper 2 Pre-assembled Kit |
| Stanford Pupper (v1) Builders who want a strong open design and will source parts | Official BOM about $890 with carbon fiber legs and 12 coreless servos. Kit sellers on its docs page are gone, so expect to order from several places. | Newegg: $59.86 (unverified) single CLS6336HV servo; ships from China |
| SpotMicro Cheapest open robot dog, if you own a printer | Roughly $300 to $500 in parts with MG996R servos and a Pi; a big remix community. Its own docs warn the cheap servos are underpowered. | The Pi Hut: GBP 9.00 (unverified) single MG996R servo Adafruit: $14.95 single; out of stock when checked |
FAQ
What is the cheapest quadruped robot I can build?
SpotMicro, if you already own a 3D printer. Without one, Petoi Bittle X is the cheapest complete kit we track.
Do these robots run ROS?
Mini Pupper 2 supports ROS 2 out of the box. SpotMicro has community ROS ports. Bittle X and the original Pupper use their own software.
How long does it take to build one?
Bittle X takes under an hour per Petoi. Mini Pupper 2 with pre-built legs takes about an hour. Stanford Pupper and SpotMicro take days to weeks including printing and calibration.
Can I use the same servos across these builds?
Not really. Bittle uses Petoi's own small servos, Mini Pupper uses MangDang servos, and the bigger dogs use standard-size hobby servos with different horns.
