Best 6 axis robot arm kit to build yourself

The Annin AR4 is the best all-round DIY six axis kit: machined aluminum links, closed-loop geared steppers and a mature control program, at about $1,900 for the combo kit plus StepperOnline's motor package. PAROL6 is the best printed alternative, with belt drives and Python control, but its control board is closed and only sold by Source Robotics. On a budget, Thor gives you six axes for a few hundred dollars if you source every part yourself.

FAQ

How long does an AR4 take to build?

Plan on several weekends. The kits remove sourcing, but wiring six drivers, setting DIP switches and calibrating still takes time.

Is the PAROL6 fully open source?

The mechanics and software are open, but the control board design is not; you buy the board from Source Robotics, and it has sold out before.

Can a six axis DIY arm run ROS 2?

Yes for the AR4 through a community ROS 2 driver, and PAROL6 has Python APIs. Thor and Moveo speak G-code, so ROS 2 needs extra glue.

Why is the BCN3D Moveo not on this list?

It has five axes, not six. It is covered in our cheapest arm guide.
